We've been busy in The CAM Lab the past few months! Click the image below to read our Spring/Summer newsletter and find out what we've been up to!
Congratulations to our five graduating lab members! While we are sad to see them go, we can't wait to see all the success they have in the future. Read below to find out more about each of their plans after graduation!
Kylie Fried plans on going to graduate school at SBU in the Fall of 2021 where she will be earning her Masters in Occupational Therapy. Jackie Ho will be starting as a graduate student at the University of Maryland to study Human Computer Interaction. Santhosh Koduri plans on attending medical school after he graduates. Nikitha Menon plans on taking a gap year before starting medical school and working as a phlebotomist. And last but not least, Amanda Truppo will be starting a masters program in school psychology. Congratulations graduates- The CAM Lab will miss you! We are excited to announce that Natasha Rajah from McGill university will be giving a virtual talk on May 6th, 3:30pm EST. Dr. Rajah is a professor in the Department of Psychiatry at McGill University and the Director of the Brain Imaging Centre at the Douglas Research Centre. Broadly speaking, Dr. Rajah’s research employs a lifespan approach to studying cognitive aging processes through behavioral and neuroimaging techniques. On May 6th, Dr. Rajah will present her research examining the effect of age, sex and gender on the neurobiology of episodic memory. To register for the event, please click HERE. The CAM lab is happy to be back in the (virtual) lab after a long winter break! We kicked off the Spring Semester with our first lab meeting of 2021. We're looking forward to a year filled with new exciting research, interesting and fun lab meeting discussions and hopefully some in-person testing! Here is the CAM Spring 2021 lab team (missing a few faces)!
The CAM Lab is excited to welcome our newest undergraduate research assistant, Elita! Elita is a psychology major (B.S.) with goals of pursuing a PhD in clinical psychology. She is excited to learn more about factors that may cause individuals to experience cognitive decline and how this information can be used to inform clinical practices. Welcome to The CAM Lab, Elita!
We are proud to announce that Joli, an undergraduate researcher in the lab, was selected for the Stony Brook Psychology Honors Program. For this program, Joli will be completing 3 semesters of research in the lab under the mentorship of Dr. Richmond. We caught up with Joli to discuss her purpose for joining the Honors program and heres what she had to say: "I was very interested when I first found out about this program as I wanted to pursue the opportunity to strengthen my research skills. I admired students on the SBU Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (URECA) page who could eloquently describe the findings and the contributions they made in their research labs to discover something new that may have real life implications. I want to confidently find a topic I am interested in, design an experiment, test my hypothesis, and share my results with others. I wanted Dr. Richmond to be my mentor because I admire her work ethic, research knowledge/skills and her ability to explain and clarify concepts. I believe I can gain a lot from Dr. Richmond, not just on my project, but also by learning what it is like to pursue a career in research. The skills I will acquire (eg. oral presentation, critical thinking, data analysis, knowledge of psychological and biological concepts) will prepare me to become the physician I aspire to be in the future." Congrats, Joli! We are excited to see the research you conduct!
At the 61st annual Psychonomic meeting, Katie Burnett was announced a winner for the Women in Cognitive Science (WiCS) Jr. Scientist Networking award. This award provides early career scientists with the opportunity to meet with senior peers and mentors to discuss research in the field. In these meetings Katie had the opportunity to talk about her own ongoing projects related to topics such as cognitive offloading, cognitive aging and working memory capacity and to hear about some of the work going on in labs that are addressing similar research questions.
Congratulations, Katie! We are proud to announce that our very own PhD student, Katie Burnett, has been awarded the Women in Cognitive Science Networking Award! The Psychonomic Society and Women in Cognitive Science Networking Award for Junior Scientists provides women in cognitive science opportunities to forge professional connections with peers and mentors in the field . Katie will be meeting with three senior scientists (virtually of course!) at the annual 2020 Psychonomic Society meeting that is being held November 19-21! At the conference, Katie will be presenting her work on processing performance on complex span tasks. For more information on the Psychonomic Society 2020 Meeting, CLICK HERE. Well done, Katie! During this time, when social distancing is critical in order to protect ourselves and each other from COVID-19, it can be difficult to engage in the social interactions we are accustomed to. This is especially true for those living in assisted living and nursing homes. In addition to this, to protect residents many assisted living and nursing homes have closed their doors to friends and family visiting residents until further notice. Given these changes, it is common for residents to feel down and isolated at this time. To combat this, the Stony Brook University Aging Interest Group has extended an initiative started by the Gerontological Society of America to send cards and messages to residents to let them know that we are thinking of them during these times. To date, The Aging Interest Group has collected 207 cards to distribute to assisted living and nursing home residents in and around the Stony Brook community!
We are asking for your help in sending more encouraging and uplifting cards to seniors in our community! Click below for more information on how you can send a card! |
